Government officials have been asked to conduct an urgent safety review at the Gosford Road at Markethill.
The call comes in the wake of last Thursday’s accident which involved two lorries.
Three people were injured in the accident, fortunately none of them seriously.
It happened at a very busy time, at around 9am, and involved a cattle transporter and articulated lorry, the latter of which careered into a metal railing, the only thing which prevented it ploughing into the homes of local residents.
There have been other similar accidents in recent times.
And there have also been calls for more to be done to alleviate dangers, especially too around the Gosford Forest Park entrance to the town.
Now Newry and Armagh Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy wants action taken as a matter of urgency.
Mr Kennedy has asked Roads Minister Michelle McIlveen – who replaced him in the ministerial role last September – to order a safety review.
He believes that TransportNI should conduct a proper study of the Gosford Road at Markethill with a view to bringing forward, where possible, preventative measures to help prevent future accidents at this location.
DUP Councillor Gareth Wilson – who had posted pictures of last Thursday’s accident on his Facebook page – also hopes that TransportNI will now act to improve safety for all – motorists, pedestrians and residents – in the area.
