Contractors in south Armagh were subjected to abuse after false rumours circulated that they were working on the installation of 5G masts.
This is not the case.
Residents raised concerns at the sight of contractors in the area; concerns heightened by recent unconfirmed reports of the so-called dangers of the 5G towers.
Earlier this month 5G phone masts were being set alight in parts of the UK, after online conspiracy theories misleadingly linked the cell towers to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady cleared up the issue, categorically stating that 5G masts were not being installed locally.
“We have been contacted by local people who raised concerns over reports that 5G was being installed in the area amid false rumours regarding its impact on the current public health emergency,” explained Mr Brady.
“Following consultation with broadband providers we have been assured there are currently no plans to install 5G in the area.
“There are also no planning applications for any 5G infrastructure lodged with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
“Some broadband engineers have reported being subjected to abuse while carrying out essential work to maintain the existing network. Such abuse is wrong and needs to stop.
“All workers should be able to go about their work free from fear, harassment, intimidation or threat.”
