A consultant gynaecologist, who was working in Daisy Hill Hospital, has admitted sterilising a woman without her permission and without medical need, the BBC has reported.

Dr David Sim carried out a procedure during an emergency caesarean section in September 2021.

While Dr Sim did not appear before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) on Wednesday, November 22, he was represented by Andrew Hockton, KC, instructed by Carson McDowell, and GMC (General Medical Council) representative Nicholas Hall.

The tribunal was told that the procedure was not necessary to save the woman’s life or save her from harm; ultimately a violation of the woman’s reproductive rights.

The MPTS will now consider their verdict into his conduct and decide whether he will be allowed to continuing practising and / or face further sanctions.

The Southern Health Trust says they do not comment on individual staff members and will not be commenting at this time.
