A 35-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing incident in Newry on Friday night.
The incident left, which occurred in the talbot Street area of the city, left a 41-year-old man with “life changing injuries”.
He was stabbed in the leg around 10.30pm before being rushed to hospital for surgery late last night.
A 22-year-old man who was also arrested has been released without charge.
The 35-year-old is due to appear in Newry Magistrates’s Court on Monday.
Police earlier described the incident as “a savage attack” and said the victim has been left with “life-changing injuries”.
Sinn Féin councillor Valerie Harte said the people of Newry were shocked by what had happened.
Speaking to the BBC, she said: “The lady who had contacted me (about it) had actually been at the shop with her two young grandchildren.
“To come out of the shop and see a load of policemen running up and down the street, it was very traumatic for the two young children involved, I believe they’re only seven and eight years of age.”
She added that there was “no place in our communities for this knife culture which seems to be taking over at the minute”.
