A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being rescued from the canal in Newry.
Police in Newry received a report shortly after midnight that someone was in the water close to the Quays and raced to the scene.
The man was rescued from the water and CPR was performed. Officers used a defibrillator and were able to treat the man, finding a pulse, until medics arrived.
The PSNI said: “The male was taken to Daisy Hill where he is critically ill but in the very capable hands of the dedicated staff there.
“We didn’t know the male, his background or anything about him. Our primary role as police officers is to protect life, we did that.”
Police say their thoughts are with the man and his family.
They have also thanked those who helped, including staff of the Quays Shopping Centre, ambulance personnel and some passersby who offered assistance.
These included a young man who provided a blanked with a football team logo and police want to trace him to return it.
If anyone knows who owns the blanket, contact the PSNI in Newry and Mourne using the non-emergency number 101 quoting ref 10 24/09/16.
