A Newry man who assaulted a woman after she came to inform him of his eviction has been ordered to pay a fine of £400.
The 47-year-old’s barrister told court: “He had some grievance that proper procedure was not followed but his reaction was unacceptable.”
Gareth Desmond Carroll, of Toragh Park, had pleas of guilty entered to common assault and resisting police at Newry Magistrates’.
Prosecution outlined that on January 2, at 4.15pm, the female injured party accompanied a relative to an address on Chapel Street, Newry, of which he was landlord.
This defendant was the occupant of the property and the injured party had gone with the landlord, due to his ill health, in order to inform Carroll the 28 days of his eviction notice were up.
The defendant invited the pair in but became aggressive after being informed of the news and said that he did not have alternative accommodation.
He then proceeded to push the head of the injured party against a wall and she then left the property.
She contacted police at 8.15pm to report that Carroll was outside her property shouting for she and her partner to come out.
Police arrived at the scene and the defendant resisted as they attempted to make an arrest.
Defence barrister Kevin O’Hare stated: “This is a plea at the earliest opportunity. He had some grievance that proper procedure was not followed but his reaction was unacceptable.”
District Judge Eamonn King ordered Carroll to pay a fine of £400, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
