A Newry man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder following a serious assault on Monday.
The charge against the 26-year-old man related to an incident which happened in the Windsor Manor area of the city.
Barry McAleavey, of Clanrye Avenue, appeared at Newry Magistrates’ Court via videolink from police custody on Wednesday.
As the charge was read, court heard that the offence was alleged to have been committed on January 3.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the incident happened in the Windsor Manor area of the city.
The man who was injured in the assault was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The defendant confirmed that he understood the charge and was connected to the same by a constable.
Defence solicitor Gerard Trainor made no question to the connection and asked for case to be adjourned until January 19 for a bail application.
District Judge Eamon King remaned McAleavey in custody to appear before Newry Magistrates on January 19.
