Two Newry men accused of possession of MDMA with intent to supply among other drugs charges will face Crown Court proceedings later this year.
Both defendants appeared at the city’s Magistrates’ on Wednesday for the purposes of a preliminary enquiry (PE), the legal process during which a case is referred to the higher court.
Darryl McGee-Smith, 20, of Daisy Hill, is charged with possession of Class A with intent to supply, five counts of possession of Class A, possession of Class B and possessing criminal property.
Meanwhile, Jake McLoughlin, 20, of Spring Martin, faces possession of Class A with intent to supply and two counts of possession of Class A.
As the charges were read, it was heard that all of the offences were alleged to have occurred on June 9 and 10, of last year.
The substances which were alleged to have been found in the possession of the two accused were named as MDMA, cocaine and cannabis.
McGee-Smith is also accused of being in possession of criminal property, which was identified as £500 in cash.
Appearing in court, both men made no objection to the holding of a preliminary enquiry.
Prosecution submitted that based on the papers before the court there was a prima facie case to answer.
Defence counsel made no contrary submissions.
District Judge Eamonn King said that he was satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer.
The defendants were released on continuing bail to appear before Newry Crown Court on September 2 for arraignment.
