A £2.5 million investment into a large number of play strategy projects across the Newry, Mourne and Down Borough has been approved.
The Council’s Active and Healthy Communities Committee gave the green light this week, however, the decision will still need to be ratified at full council early next month.
Sinn Fein Councillor Liz Kimmins has said the decision will help improve the quality of life of all who will benefit from the projects.
“The Active & Healthy Communities Committee as a result of our Play Strategy have just approved a large number of capital scheme projects to be tendered and delivered by 2019, for the combined total of just over £2.5m,” explained councillor Kimmins.
“This includes the much needed upgrade of the playparks in Meigh, Carrivemaclone and Cloughogue which I have been lobbying for over the past number of years.”
She added: “Playboard NI will be carrying out community consultation on behalf of our Council over the coming weeks and months in each of the areas, and it is important that people living in these areas contribute to this.
“Consultation will take place in a number of ways to ensure the broadest range of feedback is received.
“Rural areas in particular seem to be lacking modern fit for purpose outdoor play facilities for children and young people.
“This is an issue that has to be addressed by Newry, Mourne & Down Council”.
