
Staff at Newry Leisure Centre have been subjected to vile and threatening abuse, it has been claimed.
Newry City Sinn Féin Councillor Aidan Mathers said that abuse towards any member of Council staff is not acceptable.
The councillor made his comments after it was revealed that some staff members in the Newry City Lesuire Centre had been subject to aggressive and threatening behaviour whilst working there.
“All employees everywhere deserve to be treated with dignity and respect whilst carrying out their jobs,” he said.
“Members of our leisure centre staff have recently been subject to vile abuse and threatening behaviour from some users of the facilities. This is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.”
The councillor said Council, which aims to make its facilities safe spaces for all is planning to increase security measures within the Centre.
Said Cllr Mathers: “This is unfortunate but deemed necessary.”
He added: “I would appeal to all service users to treat staff and fellow members of the public using our facilities with respect.
“Thanks to everyone who has supported the centre since reopening. Anyone who has issues or concerns are welcome to communicate them through the appropriate channels.”
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has said it is “aware of concerns” and has asked the public not to be abusive towards staff.
A spokesperson, when contacted, told Armagh I : “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is aware of concerns raised in relation to alleged anti-social behaviour at Newry Leisure Centre.
“Such actions from a minority of customers are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“Where appropriate, the Council liaises closely with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in relation to any reported incidents, particularly those involving alleged threats to staff or members of the public.
“These matters are currently under investigation and, as such, the Council is not in a position to comment on individual cases or staffing matters.
“The safety and wellbeing of all users and staff remain the highest priority of the Council and it is committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment across all its facilities.
“We ask that all visitors treat our staff and fellow customers with respect and adhere to Centre rules to assist us in maintaining an enjoyable environment for all.”
