Firefighters spend five hours tackling farm blaze in south Armagh

Farmer managed to get his livestock to safety before fire spread

Around 30 firefighter spent five hours tackling a blaze on a farm in south Armagh last night (Thursday).

The fire broke out at a cattle shed on the Mallawee Road in Mowhan, between Markethill and Newtownhamilton, shortly before 8pm.

Four appliances from Keady, one from Armagh, two from Newtownhamilton and a water tanker from Pomeroy assisted in the operation.

The owner of the large agricultural shed raised the alarm when he spotted the flames and was able to remove the livestock from the building.

The last of the fire crews stood down at 12.30am this morning.

There was extensive damage to one side and the roof of the building, however, the structure remained upright.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental.
