A man accused of three counts of rape and making threats to kill, all allegedly involving the same female, will face Crown Court proceedings in the New Year.

Audrius Silinskas, of Castleblayney Street in Newtownhamilton, appeared charged with three counts of rape, threats to kill and assault with intent to committing rape at Newry Magistrates’ on Wednesday.

As the charges were read, it was heard that all of the alleged offences are said to have occurred on August 15, of last year and all related to a single named female.

While none of the alleged facts were opened in court, previous hearings were told that police were alerted after the complainant had fled naked from a house in Co Armagh.

She had just flown in to Northern Ireland after answering a job advert.

Appearing via videolink from Maghaberry, the 40-year-old made no objection to the holding of a preliminary enquiry.

Prosecution submitted that based on the papers before the court there was a prima facie case to answer.

Defence solicitor Ruari Gillen made no contrary submissions.

District Judge Eamonn King said that he was satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer.

Silinskas was remanded in custody to appear before Newry Crown Court on February 9 for arraignment.
