Newtown volunteers deliver 1,700 packages to local residents with plans to alleviate holiday hunger

Newtown Community Association

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Newtownhamilton Community Association has delivered almost 1,700 packages to families and vulnerable residents across the area.

The work of the community group was recognised when Chair of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Laura Devlin paid a visit to the south Armagh town.

This was Councillor Devlin’s first visit and she was accompanied by SDLP colleague Pete Byrne and Sinn Fein Councillor Barra Ó Muirí.

Members of the Community Association, together with some of our volunteers, had a very informative discussion with the Council Chair on the many aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic and how the Association is supporting the community through these challenging times.

To date the Community Association, Volunteers and members of St Michael’s GFC Newtownhamilton have delivered:

– Approx 1,300 DfC / Council Funded Food Boxes
– Approx 275 Food Bags to young families
– Approx 112 NIHE Funded Toiletry Packs, which included Puzzle Books and or Activity Packs

Councillor Devlin was very impressed with these figures and with the group’s plans for continuing support, which include alleviating holiday hunger.

She offered her congratulations on the magnificent work being carried out by all involved.

Figures show that Newtownhamilton is the forerunner in receiving essential support through the Community Centre on a district wide level.

A word of commendation went out to Niall Murray on the success of various funding applications and co-ordinating the Community Association’s response to COVID-19.

The afternoon concluded with the usual Newtown hospitality, refreshments being served for all.
