Close to 300 trees have been planted along the Newry to Portadown Canal in memory of those who lost their lies locally during the Covid-19 pandemic.
And tonight, the wording of special plaques is to be agreed upon, with these to be placed on site.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council agreed in June 2021 to consider planting Covid memorial trees.
It has now been confirmed that 285 have been planted at three separate locations.
These are located north of Moneypenny’s Forge, north of the main Gilford to Tandragee Road and to the north of Scarva village.
One standard tree has also been planted at each of three locations which will act as ‘host’ for the Covid memorial plaques.
ABC Council’s environmental services committee has been asked to agree the wording of the plaques.
The recommended inscription reads: “These trees have been planted to remember all those who sadly lost their lives to Covid-19 across the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough.”
Additionally, the Covid memorial would state: “This bench is dedicated to all those who sadly lost their lives to Covid-19 across the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough.”
The committee will meet tonight (Tuesday) to make its decision.
