A Portadown man who had been free from cannabis for five and a half years has been handed a suspended sentence after a police search of his home found a joint valued at £5.
Jamie Weir, of Ballyoran Manor, pleaded guilty to possession of class B at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on June 9 of last year, when a police search of the defendant’s home led to the joint being found.
Twenty-five-year-old Weir told officers the cannabis – worth around £5 – was his and was for personal use.
Defence barrister David McKeown said his client had previously been “five and a half years absent from the drug and it is a concern that he has returned”.
Mr McKeown added that Weir was now in full-time employment and his offending was on “a much lower level than before”.
District Judge Bernie Kelly told the defendant “given your previous record I have to warrant this so serious that community service is not suitable.”
She sentenced Weir to three months in prison suspended for two years.
