A Portuguese national who bit his ex-partner’s lip has been sentenced to three months in prison.
Cesar Mendes, 58, of Garvaghy Road, Portadown, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates’ on Friday charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.
The incident took place on September 14, last year, when police were called to a domestic disturbance in Portadown.
At the address, they spoke to the injured party who explained that herself and Mendes had separated but were living in the same house.
She told police that at around 1.30am he had come to her room and pulled the duvet off the bed.
He then bent down as if to kiss her but instead, he bit her lip and then in a struggle struck her on the left and right side of her head.
Police then circulated for his arrest, and when found he told them he had been at the house but that she had bitten his thumb.
Defence counsel explained that Mendes recently had an application for permanent residency turned down and so was awaiting deportation.
They added that he had children aged 10 and 13 in Northern Ireland but he had no contact with.
District Judge Bernie Kelly told Mendes that “domestic violence is a very serious matter” and that this was a “particularly nasty attack”.
Mendes was sentenced to three months in prison and ordered to pay an offender’s levy of £25.
