Public consultation opens today into £3m park and ride at Portadown Train Station

A public consultation on a massive £3 million park and ride facility at Portadown Train Station – which Armagh I reported last month – has now opened.

People are being encouraged to have their say on the development, which would consist of 340 spaces.

Last month Transport Minister Michelle McIlveen, speaking in the Assembly in response to a question from DUP Upper Bann MLA Sydney Anderson, described the project as being at “an advanced stage”.

Today (Wednesday), Minister McIlveen has enforced that point with the launch of the consultation and plans for a public information session later this month.

The potential site – located at Corcrain Road – has the potential to improve the current facilities and help meet the growing demand for park and ride in the area.

Minister McIlveen said: “The popularity of park and ride has grown significantly in recent years as more people enjoy the convenience of using public transport.

“Developments in sites like this are an important part of our plans to offer even better travel options for customers.

“A new enhanced park and ride facility would be an additional asset to the wider Portadown and Craigavon community, making rail travel even more convenient and accessible.

“I would encourage everyone to take part in the consultation and, if possible, to go along to the public information day.”

That information day will take place on Wednesday, March 23, between 1.30pm and 7pm, when members of the public can call at Portadown Train Station, speak to Translink officials and find out more about this major scheme.

Translink Project Manager Aidan Stott said: “We are in the early planning stages of this project which will require appropriate funding and planning approval.

“We want the local community to help us shape the plans we submit for planning application in the coming months and are encouraging the public to tell us their views on the project.

“To do this the public can visit our website http://www.translink.co.uk/portadownp&rconsult or pick up a leaflet from Portadown Train station to find out more and to share their views.”

The consultation is now open and will end on June 17.
