Restricted driver clocked by police doing twice the speed limit

R driver caught doing 60mph in a 30mph zone at 1am in the morning

A restricted driver has been handed three penalty points after being he was caught travelling 30mph over the speed limit.

The 20-year-old Portadown man was also fined for displaying registration markings which did not meet the legal height required.

Ruben Jesus Campos, of Ripley Mews, pleaded guilty to excess speed and improper registration markings at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Court heard the defendant was detected by police driving a Mini travelling at 60mph of the Tandragee Road, Portadown – a 30mph zone – at around 1am on July 21.

Officers noted that ‘R’ plates were displayed on the car and Campos was found to be a restricted driver.

Police also noticed that the licence plate on the vehicle did not meet legal requirements with the characters measuring at 59mm in height.

The defendant made no reply when cautioned and appeared before the court with no record.

Defence solicitor John McAtamney stated that the plates had come with the vehicle and that this issue had been rectified the very next day.

He commented that this occurred “late at night” and although there was no excuse for the speed this was a “stretch of road out to the country with not many in the way of pedestrians or other road users”.

Campos was handed three penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £150, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within six weeks.
