Woman who pushed female against kitchen cabinet after being refused alcohol ‘mortified’

Defence said his client was 'mortified' by the description of the incident - of which she had very little recollection- and had not consumed alcohol since

Craigavon-Courthouse

A Portadown woman who pushed a female after being denied alcohol has been ordered to pay a fine of £500.

The 47-year-old’s solicitor told court his client had been left “mortified” by the description of the incident, of which she had very little recollection, and that she had not consumed alcohol since.

Helen Cassidy, of Hartfield Avenue, pleaded guilty to one count of common assault at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecution outlined that on July 3, at 11am, the injured party had been at her friend’s house and the defendant had entered demanding alcohol.

Police arrived and removed Cassidy from the premises but she later returned, once more demanding alcohol.

When refused, the defendant became aggressive, pushing the injured party and causing her to fall against a kitchen cabinet, leaving her with bruising to her arm.

Cassidy then left the property but was later found intoxicated at her own home by police.

Defence solicitor Gabriel Ingram told court that the defendant had worked in France as an English assistant for some 10 years but came back to Northern Ireland 12 years ago and had not worked since.

He added that Cassidy was “mortified” by the description of the incident, of which she had very little recollection, and that she had not consumed alcohol since.

District Judge Bernie Kelly ordered the defendant to pay a fine of £500, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 20 weeks.
