Long overdue repair works on Newtownhamilton roads to begin in new year

Newry Road, Newtownhamilton

Long overdue repairs on roads around Newtownhamilton are due to take place in the New Year.

While no exact timeframe has been given for the works, the Newry Road and Dundalk Road are set to undergo much-needed maintenance, while the Armagh Road will be a little later in the year.

Sinn Féin councillor Barra Ó Muirí has welcomed the commitment from the Department for Infrastructure (DfI).

The Slieve Gullion councillor said: “After much lobbying we’re delighted that DfI have now committed to begin works on the Newry Road and the Dundalk Road in the new year.

“They are also monitoring the erosion on the Armagh Road and are aiming to carry out repair works here in the new financial year, on the basis of funding being allocated.

“These roads and others out of Newtown have been in an extremely poor condition for many years and this was only worsened by the contracts issue which prevented any major works being carried out for a significant period of time.

“Thankfully these issues have been resolved and I welcome the commitment from DfI to address these issues.

“People deserve to have roads that are safe and fit for purpose and Sinn Féin will continue to work to deliver improved road safety for workers and families across South Armagh.”
