A man has been arrested following the discovery of a “substantial” fuel laundering site in Newtownhamilton.
The plant was uncovered on Tuesday after police detected a suspicious fuel tanker in the area.
A spokesperson for HMRC, who have assumed control of the investigation, said: “HMRC officers, working alongside Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI), arrested a man in his fifties on suspicion on evasion of excise duty, VAT and money laundering offences on March 5. Investigations are ongoing.”
A police spokesperson added: “Officers from Local Policing Team and Slieve Gullion North Neighbourhood Policing Team were part of a joint operation with colleagues in HMRC and worked to dismantle the site.
“A number of vehicles/ items were seized an individual was arrested. A full investigation is underway.
“This is a great example of pro-active Policing disrupting criminality.”
