Work is due to start shortly on a traffic calming scheme outside a rural south Armagh primary school.

The work – which will take four weeks to complete – has been welcomed.

Contractors are in place and ready to begin at St Laurence O Toole Primary School in Belleeks.

Sinn Fein councillor Oonagh Magennis has welcomed the news.

It was last November, at a meeting with Department for Infrastructure (DfI) officials to discuss ongoing concerns about vehicle and pedestrian safety in the vicinity of school, when it was agreed to implement traffic calming measures.

Councillor Magennis said: “This will be of huge relief to the Belleeks community who have resolutely campaigned to get some sort of traffic calming measures in place.

“While this development might not be all they had wished for, it is a start and it will alleviate some of the speeding issues through the village and more importantly outside the local primary school.”
