Tributes have been paid to a longstanding Mullaghbawn community doctor who was additionally honoured as a Papal Knight of St. Gregory.
Dr Anthony Smyth passed away peacefully at home on December 11, 2025.
He had been a dedicated and trusted General Practitioner in his local community for 60 years, widely respected in both Church and civic life.
Dr Smyth lost his son, Kieran under extremely tragic circumstances in February 2001, which he described as having “devastated” him in an interview with the Irish News at the time.
His honour of being awarded Papal Knight status under the Order of St Gregory the Great is one of the highest awards a layperson can receive from the Pope in recognition of exceptional service to the Catholic Church, society, or the wider community.
One person said of the esteemed practitioner: “Rest in peace Dr Smyth, your dedication to your patients and community will never be forgotten.”
Another said: “Rest in Peace Dr Smyth, a lovely man and a great doctor, he became my Doctor in 1979. Condolences to all the family, Aidan, Leontia and family.”
A death notice described him as the devoted husband of the late Phyllis and cherished father of Anthony, Paddy, Catherine, Aidan, Nial, Sinead and the late Kieran, Brian, Siobhan and baby Síle.
Dr Anthony’s remains will leave his late residence on Friday evening at 6.45pm, arriving at St Mary’s Church at 7pm for repose. Those who wish to pay their respects are welcome to do so as the cortège passes through the village or are welcome to join the family in the Chapel for evening prayer.
Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 11am, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
