Over 80 people put their pedal power to the test for Friends of the Cancer Centre’s third annual Newry Canal Cycle on Saturday, June 29.
Deputy Lord Mayor for Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough, councillor Margaret Tinsley joined the cyclists to wish them luck as they set off on the 40-mile cycle from Portadown to Newry, stopping off at Poyntzpass for light refreshments.
The canal, which dates back to 1742, stretches from Portadown to Newry and give participants the opportunity to soak up its beautiful surroundings, local history, nature and wildlife while raising vital funds for the charity along the way.
For over 30 years, Friends of the Cancer Centre has been dedicated to making a real and meaningful difference to cancer patients and their families across Northern Ireland.
Friends of the Cancer Centre is here to enhance the quality of patient care and support through its life-changing and life-saving work.
The charity does this by funding additional nurses, supporting local research and providing practical support through its financial grants.
Friends of the Cancer Centre relies entirely on the generosity of the local community. All money donated stays in Northern Ireland, directly benefitting patients and their families.
Fundraising Manager for Friends of the Cancer Centre, Claire Hogarth, said: “Our Newry Canal Cycle was another great success and on behalf of the charity, I want to thank the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Margaret Tinsley for starting the event and especially for her help with the refreshments at Poyntzpass.
“I would like to also thank the cyclists and everyone who supported their fundraising. All money raised from the event will be spent supporting local people affected by cancer across Northern Ireland.”
