A Craigavon man who took his ex-partner to the ground using a “judo move” and jumped on her car has been sentenced to 80 hours community service.
Court heard the 23-year-old followed the woman as she walked home from work and also damaged her glasses during the assault.
Ciaran Corey, of Rowan Manor, Tullygally pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal damage and common assault at Craigavon Magistrates’ on Wednesday.
It was heard that on May 26, at 2.30am, police received a report from the injured party that her ex-partner – the defendant – had damaged her glasses, her coat and her car.
She said the defendant had been at her place of work at the Cellar Bar, Lurgan, and followed her as she made her way home.
The injured party stated Corey had grabbed her and threw her to the ground; he then threw her up against a wall.
Prosecution informed the court the injured party’s glasses and her coat were damaged during this incident.
The defendant continued to follow his the woman to the vicinity of her home.
She told police she witnessed Cory jumping on her car damaging the bonnet and windscreen.
The defendant was subsequently arrested for the offences.
During interview, Corey admitted to taking his ex-partner to the ground using a “judo move” and claimed he “lost the plot”.
He told police he ran and kicked her car, the defendant alleged he had tried to hug the injured party but was kicked away.
Corey admitted to jumping on the complainant’s car damaging the windscreen and bonnet.
Defence solicitor Conor Downey stated: “This is an extremely serious matter, Mr Corey understands that his liberty is in the balance.
“This is a man with no history of domestic violence, he made admissions and accepts that drink was taken although this is not an excuse for his behaviour towards this young woman.”
He continued: “Mr Corey was a talented young sportsman but unfortunately an injury ended his career.”
District Judge Bernie Kelly said: “Mr Corey, this was a nasty incident, and it was an incident in the context of a domestic setting”.
Corey was sentenced to a combination order consisting of 12 months probation and 80 hours of community service.
In addition, the defendant was ordered to pay compensation of £160 to the injured party for the damage to the coat and glasses.
