There is positive news for Dungannon residents who had been looking forward to the annual Halloween fireworks display – only for it to be cancelled due to strong winds – as there is a strong possibility that the fireworks will now be used as part of the Christmas switch-on event on November 29.
Councillor Dominic Molloy (Sinn Féin, Dungannon DEA) had asked for that prospect to be explored at the November 6 Policy & Resources committee meeting of Mid Ulster District Council.
A week later, at the Development committee meeting, the Dungannon representative was keen to make sure that the matter was being looked into.
He commented: “Hopefully it has been resolved at Policy & Resources committee last week, but it was in relation to the cancellation of fireworks at the Halloween event in Dungannon, and I know that traders had asked [to investigate the] possibility of using those fireworks as part of the Christmas celebration switch-on event.
“So, hopefully that’s in hand.”
Assistant Director of Health, Leisure & Wellbeing, Kieran Gordon informed Councillor Molloy: “Yes, we’ve been working away in the background on that, and subject to satisfactory licences coming through over the next week or so, we plan to utilise the fireworks at the Christmas switch-on later on this month.”
Councillor Barry Monteith wanted to second what he initially thought was a proposal, however he was pleased to note that the matter was in hand.
