Keady Glen was officially opened by Lord Mayor Julie Flaherty and representatives from the local community and schools on Friday.
A total investment of £190,000 by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council to deliver an environmental improvement scheme has transformed the Keady Glen pathway in to a newly regenerated open space for the whole community to enjoy.
Feena Hughes, Principal of St Francis Assisi Primary School: “We very much welcome the new pathway linking the Tommy Makem Arts and Community Centre to the play park providing a safe and fun environment for the children in the local community.
“We are looking forward to experiencing this new area especially with the educational opportunity it brings for school children.”
Official opening the Keady Glen pathway, Lord Mayor Julie Flaherty said: “I am delighted to welcome the local community and school representatives here today to officially open the rejuvenated Keady Glen area.
“This project now provides a safe and secure pathway from the Tommy Makem Arts and Community Centre to the Glen play park which the whole community can now enjoy this wonderful open green space.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community representatives that play their part in key holding duties for this great outdoor space and for the local play park during weekends and bank holiday times. This shows the great working relationships between council and community and ensures the longevity of these very valuable assets within the community.”
Work commenced in June 2018 on the environmental improvement scheme included the development of a new pathway, river cleaning and regrading of the embankment, new entrance gates and widened access route. The area now boasts the addition of picnic benches, seating, bins and lighting for the community to enjoy the outdoor green space.
The new Keady Glen pathway will act as a mini greenway for Keady and provide a safe environment for casual exercise and social interaction with educational opportunities for introductory level nature studies for the local school children.
The project was carried out by contractor M.P. Coleman Ltd from Stewartstown.
