Alliance select Tennyson to contest Assembly polls in Upper Bann

'It has been an incredible privilege to serve the people of Upper Bann as a local councillor and I am really delighted to have received the backing of local members to contest the next Assembly election in my home constituency'

The Alliance Party has confirmed it is to field current ABC councillor Eoin Tennyson in the next Northern Ireland Assembly elections.

It made the announcement today (Wednesday).Councillor Tennyson said he was “delighted” to have been selected and will run in Upper Bann in next year’s polls.

The selection took place at a special meeting held on Tuesday night in the constituency.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Tennyson said: “It has been an incredible privilege to serve the people of Upper Bann as a local councillor and I am really delighted to have received the backing of local members to contest the next Assembly election in my home constituency.

“As we look to recovery from the pandemic, we must not simply settle for a return to how things were before. Instead, we must grasp this opportunity to transform not only our economy and society, but also our politics.

“Alliance has ambitious plans to do just that: to tackle waiting lists; develop an integrated, properly resourced mental health service; to expand integrated education and better support children with special education needs; and to deliver a system of universal, affordable childcare.

“We’ve outlined our Green New Deal – a detailed plan to tackle the twin problems of social inequality and climate change – and offered pragmatic solutions to the challenges posed by Brexit.

“Upper Bann is a vibrant, diverse constituency. It deserves positive, progressive and inclusive leadership for all of the people who live here.

“Next May we have a real opportunity to call time on the politics of deadlock and division, and to make history by electing the first ever Alliance MLA for our constituency.

“We have A Chance for Change. Together, we can make it happen.”
