Lawyers for a man accused of the murder of three police officers near Lurgan in 1982 are seeking permission to use material from the so-called Stalker Sampson inquest.

Martin McCauley (62) had his case mentioned at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Three Royal Ulster Constabulary officers were killed in an explosion at Kinnego Embankment near Lurgan in October 1982.

The officers were Sergeant Sean Quinn and Constables Allan McCloy and Paul Hamilton.

They were on duty when the car they were travelling in drove over a bomb that had been hidden in the road and was detonated by remote control.

The IRA claimed responsibility for the attack.

All three officers were in an unmarked police car and the bomb was detonated remotely by a command wire.

McCauley, who is originally from County Armagh, has been living in the Republic of Ireland.

At Friday’s Court a defence barrister said: “We have sought permission, or a green light, from the Chief Constable to utilise the Stalker Sampson material that was generated over the course of the Stalker Sampson inquest as they are referred to”.

He said they had received a “holding response”. He said the volume of material “we anticipate receiving” is “very considerable”.

The case has been adjourned to May 2.
