Lurgan motorist driving ‘excessively slowly and weaving erratically’ had taken cocaine

The driver was stopped in Portadown

A motorist who was driving “excessively slowly” and “weaving erratically” in the Portadown area was found with cocaine in his system.

Michael Patrick McCann, of Belvedere Manor in Lurgan, was in a Landrover Freelander at 2.30am on Sunday September 29 last year.

The 43-year-old has admitted dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit.

The defendant was travelling eastbound towards Junction 12 on the M1 when the standard of driving was noted.

A member of the public stayed with the vehicle after it left the motorway and drove into Portadown where it was stopped by police.

A prosecutor said that for a “long period” the defendant had been driving “excessively slowly and weaving erratically”.

When stopped by police his eyelids were droopy, his eyes were glazed, he had slurred speech and at one point he slumped backwards onto the centre console “as if about to fall asleep”.

He had a zero alcohol reading but a blood sample showed cocaine.

A defence solicitor said the defendant apologises and added: “He shouldn’t have been taking cocaine but he certainly shouldn’t have got into the car and driven”.

He added that this was “very low speed but erratic driving”.

The defendant was banned from driving for a year and was fined £400.
