Carlingford Lough tourism plans due to be revealed

Ireland’s national tourism authority is set to reveal plans for a major tourism project in Carlingford Lough.

The Republic’s Shared Island Unit recently released €23 to Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland and Tourism Ireland to work in partnership with local authorities on border region projects.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s economy, regeneration and tourism committee was given an update on developments this week.

In chambers, Newry SDLP rep, Killian Feehan said: “Given the additional funding being made available through the Shared Island Unit for development of Carlingford Lough as a sustainable tourism region, has the council started working with the Shared Island Unit yet?

“Has anything been explored in that regard?”

Money to be spent on Carlingford Lough is understood to include plans for a network of trails and water access points.

The investment is also expected to harness the benefits of the Narrow Water Bridge, which is currently under construction across the water way between Warrenpoint and Omeath in Co Louth.

A council officer responded: “Fáilte Ireland are sort of leading on the delivery of a project and will be engaging with ourselves and Louth County Council in the coming weeks.

“This will be to set out the plans, what the proposals are and what the deliverables are in the Carlingford Lough area on the back of the application that was successful a number of months ago.”
