Two young boys were dramatically rescued from Carlingford Lough on Sunday after getting into difficulty while paddleboarding.
Kilkeel Coastguard confirmed their team was tasked to reports of paddleboarders in distress shortly before 4.30pm (September 21).
On arrival, the team’s Officer in Charge spotted the boys in the water before directing Kilkeel RNLI to their location. The RNLI crew were able to pull the two brothers, who had been clinging to a paddleboard, to safety.
The children were brought ashore at Warrenpoint Marina, where they were treated for exposure and hypothermia by Kilkeel Coastguard Rescue Team and Kilkeel RNLI.
Family members then rushed the boys to hospital, and by late evening there was welcome news that both were recovering well.
A spokesperson for Kilkeel Coastguard said: “With a flat calm day, an offshore wind and undercurrents, it is important not to underestimate the dangers of Carlingford Lough. Two lives were saved today.”
