Family behind Home Bargains launch bid for potential huge Newry development

Newry could be in line to benefit from the development of a substantial Home Bargains unit, if eventual plans are passed.

The family behind the nationwide bargain brand, TJ Morris have submitted a Proposal of Application notice (PAN) to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council – in the name of T Morris with an address of the firm’s headquarters in Liverpool – for the development of a 37 acre site between Carnbane Industrial Estate and Damolly Retail Park.

The hybrid application notice proposes a “mixed use development” comprising both retail and industrial space including a garden centre, gatehouse and coffee unit.

An industrial unit, development roads, service yards, car parking, a bus stop and a bridge are also proposed for the site.

The application will now progress to a public consultation period with a “drop in” event to be held at Canal Court Hotel on August 28 from 2pm -7pm.

Interested parties will be given the opportunity to view the display boards for the proposal and provide feedback via printed comment cards.

The local elected representatives and businesses will also be invited to this event where members of the consultation team will be available to answer any questions that local residents and stakeholders may have, and to collect feedback on the proposal.

A neighbourhood information leaflet drop will take place to residents within a circa 200m radius from the centre of the subject site.

The leaflet will include information on the Pre-Application Community Consultation (PACC) process, the drop-in event at Canal Court Hotel, and details of the point of contact within the Technical Team to ask questions, or to provide feedback on the proposal.

If the PAN is subsequently approved, TJ Morris is expected to lodge a full application, seeking outline planning permission to establish the principle of development on the site, before progressing to more detailed proposals.

According to the Irish News a spokesperson for TJ Morris said the company was unable to comment on the Newry plans.
