An environmental conservation trust has branded vandalism on the side of rocks at the summit of Wee Binnian “absolutely disgraceful”.
A tag reading “Up Armagh” was sprayed in red paint across the rock formation at one of the most popular and treasured Mourne mountain walks.
Wee Binnian – the smaller neighbour of Slieve Binnian – peaks at 460m and offers some of the most spectacular views of the Mourne countryside and Down coastline from its summit.
However, upon learning of the defacement, conservation trust Mournelive took to social media to condemn the actions of those responsible.
They described the lettering as being approximately “40-50 cm high” and said “Our mountains are part of our shared heritage, not a place for tribal point-scoring.
“Whoever did this has shown ZERO respect for the countryside, community, and county they’re claiming to support.
“Leave the mountains as you found them.”
Typically, ramblers are asked to “leave no trace” when walking any of the Mourne mountains, to leave nothing behind – even when biodegradable – as it can interfere with the ecosystem.
Advice on their website reads: “Steer clear of disrupting natural spaces as they serve as habitats for numerous species.
“Even seemingly small actions, like moving a rock, can cause significant disturbance.
“When exploring our picturesque landscape, we kindly urge you to Leave No Trace, to help us preserve our stunning region and ensuring the natural environment remains undisturbed for others to enjoy.”
Several people have called on members of Armagh GAA to clean it off as a gesture of good will.
Said one: “Disgraceful, so embarrassing for the Armagh team! Away up and get it scrubbed off lads!”
Another added: “Surely there’s someone with a bit of decency in Armagh GAA that will remove the eyesore.”
